Posted: Monday, May 13, 2013

Romanian energy output decreased 7.7% on the year to 5.44 million tons of oil equivalent in the first quarter, hurt by falling production in the thermal and nuclear sectors, official data showed Friday, news agency Mediafax reports.

Thermal energy output declined 18.4% on the year to 7.83 billion kilowatts hour, while nuclear power production was down 2.4% to around 3 billion KWh, the statistics institute INS said.

However, hydropower production rose 28.4% on the year to 3.4 billion KWh in January through March, while wind farm output increased to 1.34 billion KWh, from 648 million KWh in the same period of 2012.

Romania 's primary energy resources fell 11.7% on the year to 7.5 million tons of oil equivalent in January through March, the data showed.

Electric energy resources were down 3.9% to 15.72 billion KWh, largely due to a 2.5% decline in production.

Romanian final power consumption reached 13.1 billion KWh in the first quarter, down 4.5% from the same period of 2012. Public illumination fell 9.5% on the year, while household consumption was down 1.7%.
